Maria Clara "Klay" Infantes is a Gen Z nursing student from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila who aspires to graduate soon and work abroad. Despite being a diligent working student, she refuses to pay attention to her Rizal Studies, thinking that she has no need to learn politics in performing her duties as a nurse. Klay eventually gets into trouble with her professor, José R. Torres, after sleeping in one of his classes and later plagiarizing a book review of Noli Me Tángere for an assignment. Torres gives her a final chance by handing her a copy of the novel, saying that she will learn more with that version because it would "bring her into the world of José Rizal's novels".
One night, after accidentally falling asleep while reading the novel, Klay suddenly finds herself in the room of MarÃa Clara, a character from the novel. Initially in disbelief, she then realizes that she has traveled into the novel in 1884 and must now adapt to the people and her environment, while learning about history through her interaction with the characters.
